For over 270 years, the Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding ships and mariners safe towards the Savannah River. Ordered to be built in 1732 by the governor of the 13th colony, this historic structure is one of the few left remaining from the colonial era. Today, you can spend an enjoyable afternoon exploring the amazing lighthouse and the accompanying museum. Take a self-guided tour of the lighthouse and environs, or plan a picnic on the scenic grounds. Climb 178 steps up to the top of the edifice, and marvel in the sweeping views of the sea and coastline. You'll also find a gift shop for special souvenirs, and volunteers will be on hand at the Head Keepers Cottage to answer any questions that you might have.
