Did you know the oldest Black church in North America is in Savannah? The First African Baptist Church dates all the way back to 1773, and it has been an important part of the city from the very beginning. Situated just a block from our Historic District hotel two minutes away, this historic church is a fantastic example of the rich history that you will find in Savannah. The current building was constructed in 1859 by a majority enslaved congregation. You can see a series of beautiful stained glass windows that are illuminated in the evening, and the pipe organ is the oldest in Georgia. The current building was constructed in 1859 by a majority enslaved congregation. You can see a series of beautiful stained glass windows that are illuminated in the evening, and the pipe organ is the oldest in Georgia. Several famous names have visited the church including rock star John Mellencamp, actor, and Civil Rights activist Lou Gossett, Jr., Rev. Dr. Jesse Jackson, and former Vice President Al Gore. Historic tours are available from Tuesday through Saturday at 11 am and 2 pm and Sundays at 1 pm. The cost is $7.00 for adults and $6.00 for students and seniors.

If you are interested in worship events, there are a number of services throughout the week. Sundays offer an Empowerment Hour at 9 am and a Worship Experience at 10 am. There is also a Worship Experience on Thursdays at 7 pm.
